Rafael Solaz donates an original 1934 work by Tormo to the heritage of Levante UD

The historian and bibliophile handed the piece to President Pablo Sánchez in the VIP box before the match against the Sevillian team.

The VIP box at the Ciutat de València hosted, prior to the match between Levante UD and Sevilla FC, the donation ceremony to Levante's historical heritage by Rafael Solaz, who presented Levante UD president Pablo Sánchez with a unique artwork by Tormo. The piece, created with pen drawings, depicts the match played between Levante FC and Sevilla FC during the Superregional Championship of the 1934-35 season.

Rafael Solaz is a well-known figure in the Valencian cultural scene. He is the founder and director of the Rafael Solaz Antiquarian Bookstore, an iconic establishment with a 19th-century aesthetic. A Levante supporter and current club member, Solaz aimed to contribute to the preservation and dissemination of the club's historical memory with this donation. During the event, Pablo Sánchez highlighted the significance of a piece that looks back at the Levante FC of the 1930s, a pivotal era in the club's history and in Valencian football.

For his part, Rafael Solaz expressed his satisfaction at the opportunity to add this work to the club's historical collection. “It is an honor for me as a Levante supporter to donate this document,” he stated.

The memory of a victory against Sevilla

The artwork contains a graphic recreation of the match between Levante FC and Sevilla FC at the Campo de La Cruz, at the start of the Superregional Championship of the 1934-1935 season. The team from the Maritime Districts won 3-0, a victory captured in the pen-drawn scenes.

The piece is a unique testimony not only because of its connection to that match but also because of the way 1930s football was immortalized on paper. The drawing offers a glimpse into the aesthetics, protagonists, and memory of a competition that is part of Valencian football history.

Levante, champion of a historic competition

Levante won the Superregional Championship of the 1934-1935 season, a competition that brought together prominent Spanish football clubs. The "granota" team faced rivals such as Valencia, Betis, Hércules, and Sevilla, teams that were part of the top-tier competitive environment.

The title was decided in a closely contested competition, culminating in the final matchday, where the goal-average was decisive in crowning Levante as champions. That triumph marked an extraordinary season and led the team to one of the most celebrated performances in its history.

The victory in the Superregional Championship paved the way for a brilliant run in the Spanish Cup. After defeating Valencia in a fratricidal knockout round, Levante reached the quarterfinals, where they faced Barcelona. Draws at Les Corts and the Campo de La Cruz led to a tiebreaker match at the Torrero stadium.

In Zaragoza, Levante wrote one of its most illustrious chapters by eliminating the "blaugrana" team and reaching the semifinals. The cup run ended against Sabadell, just short of a final that the "granota" team could not reach.

A legacy from the first golden age

Tormo's artwork thus becomes a direct testimony of the first golden age of Levante FC, a team that achieved significant sporting prominence in the years immediately preceding the Spanish Civil War. The memory of that era also includes the conquest of the Free Spain Cup in July 1937, one of the most significant and unique episodes in Levante's history.
