The granota courage goes unrewarded at San Mamés.
Athletic Club 4-2 Levante UD
Levante UD returned from Bilbao without a reward after fighting against adversity from the early stages of the match and trying until the end, showing grit and pride. The Levante players were reduced to ten men from the 17th minute, and with one player less, they fought hard to earn points at San Mamés. Elgezabal and Olasagasti scored the goals for the granota team, but they were not enough to level the match.
Both teams struggled to clearly approach the opposing area, and chances came from long-range shots. The granota team was reduced to ten men in the 17th minute after the referee showed a red card to Matturro following a clash between the center-back and Williams Jr. There was still a lot of the match left, and the Levante players had to double their efforts. Despite this, Luís Castro's team did not lose their identity, but they received a blow about ten minutes later. Guruzeta headed in a good assist from R. de Galarreta and put his team ahead on the scoreboard. Minutes later, Guruzeta scored again and extended the lead.
The Levante players did not give up and continued working in search of a goal that would allow them to go into halftime closer to their opponent on the scoreboard.
After the break, the first notable chance came from the home team with a cross shot by Guruzeta that Ryan deflected for a corner. The Valencians did not give up, showed pride, and tried their luck with a move by Etta Eyong that ended in a corner and a long-range shot by Iván Romero that was caught by Unai Simón. Athletic responded minutes later with a shot by Williams from inside the area that went over the bar and, subsequently, with a shot by Williams Jr. that Ryan deflected for a corner. Etta Eyong forced a corner minutes later, and from that same corner, Levante UD managed to reduce the deficit. It was with a bicycle kick by Elgezabal, who scored his first goal in the top category.
The Valencians were alive and eager for more. However, Athletic appeared again to score the third through Nico Serrano. Time was running against Levante's interests, but the team once again showed that they never give up. The match entered injury time, and Levante UD scored again with a volley by Olasagasti from the edge of the box. There was still room for excitement. The game had to be stopped after Kervin Arriaga suffered a head injury, and after play resumed, Navarro scored the last goal of the match with no time left for more.
