March 1, 1981, was forever etched in the memory of Levante fans. That Sunday, Johan Cruyff debuted wearing the Levante UD jersey in a Second Division match against Palencia. The Ciutat de València Stadium hosted such an illustrious event. A scene that seemed like a chimera turned the Orriols coliseum into the epicenter of world football.

The agreement between Cruyff and Levante was finalized in the final days of February 1981. However, the beginning of this controversial relationship dates back to January. After a victory against Burgos (2-0) that placed the team led by Pachín at the top of the standings, the name of the Dutch star began to circulate strongly among the Levante rumor mills. For weeks, his signing was a story of comings and goings, denials, and confirmations that seemed straight out of a science fiction tale.

February turmoil, maximum expectation

Cruyff landed in Valencia near the end of February, just a few days after the attempted coup d'état led by Antonio Tejero. The Dutchman trained with his new teammates on the eve of the match against Palencia in an atmosphere of great anticipation. What had started as a social, economic, and sports marketing operation was about to become a reality.

The day Orriols looked at the world

The stands of the Nou Estadi hosted a second-division match that captured international attention. Under the incredulous gaze of European football, Cruyff made his debut wearing the Levante's blue and red jersey. The pairing was as unique as it was real: the legend would face the final stretch of the 1980-1981 season as a Levante player.

A brief stage full of symbols

Cruyff played ten official matches with Levante and scored two goals. He never became a standout player, and the team, with its strong collective character, ended up fading into a mid-table position. Even so, his time left a trail of urban legends and iconic images: the number nine jersey, a shirt without the traditional crest, and eternal gestures, pointing to the sky or organizing the game with open arms.

An exhibition for the memory

This coming Saturday, coinciding with the match between Levante and Girona FC, the VIP Box exhibition will be dedicated to Johan Cruyff. Among the documents on display are his contract, the federation card, official records, the ticket for the match against Palencia, and various documentation related to his time at the club. A tribute to a story as brief as it is unique.
